Sinhalese Cuisine

Sinhalese cuisine is the cuisine of the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka(ශ්‍රී ලංකාව) was formerly known in English as Ceylon. Colombo(කොළඹ kolamba) is a major city.

Ingredients

Rice is a staple food.

Cinnamon(කුරුඳු kurundu) is widely used. Ceylon cinnamon, or true cinnamon, is native to Sri Lanka and used in a variety of dishes.

Coconut(පොල් pol) is common. Mature coconut meat is shredded and used for coconut milk and other dishes. Young coconuts are enjoyed fresh, the juice drank and tender flesh scraped and eaten.

Breadfruit(දෙල් del) and jackfruit(කොස් kos) are grown and often used while still unripe.

Wood apple is a unique native fruit.

Dried skipjack or other tuna, known as umbalakada(උම්බලකඩ), is imported from Maldives and used in certain dishes.

  • viyamjanaya(වෑංජනය): curry, usually with vegetables and coconut milk
  • kiri hodi(කිරි හොදි): plain coconut milk curry
