Burmese Cuisine

Lower Burmese or lower Myanmar cuisine is the food culture of the Burmese or Bamar people of coastal central Myanmar or Burma.

The Irrawaddy Delta is an important part of Lower Myanmar, where the Irrawaddy River(ဧရာဝတီမြစ်) reaches the Andaman Sea.

Yangon or Rangoon(ရန်ကုန်) is a Bamar cultural center as well as a historic city and the largest city in Myanmar.

Ingredients

Aromatic tropical japonica or javanica rice is common, especially a high-quality local variety known as pawsan.

rice noodles(မုန့်ဖတ် mont bat)

fish or shrimp paste, originally adopted from Mon cuisine, is very commonly used

  • htamane(ထမနဲ): mashed sticky rice with savory toppings
  • mont di(မုန့်တီ): rice noodles with various toppings and sauce or broth
  • mohinga(မုန့်ဟင်းခါ): fish and rice noodle soup, traditionally a breakfast food
